Heavy trucks banned from rehabilitated roads at NRA

- Rene U. Borromeo -

CEBU, Philippines – Heavy vehicles such as loaded dump trucks would no longer be allowed to use the roads at the North Reclamation Area that are undergoing rehabilitation.

Yesterday, Mayor Michael Rama instructed former councilor Sylvan Jakosalem, chairman of the City Traffic Operations Management (CITOM), to enforce the ban once the asphalting of two roads at NRA is completed.

The asphalting project is being implemented on 6th Street, the road fronting the White Gold Club and the road linking General Maxilom Avenue to SM City Cebu. The roads are closed from vehicle traffic at present.

Rama said the roads would be easily destroyed if heavy trucks would be allowed to use them again.

"Kon ato gud nga tugotan nga makaagi diha ang mga bugat kaayo nga sakyanan maguba ra usab dayon na ang mga karsada nga atong gipang-aspalto," the mayor explained.

A dump truck loaded with sand and gravel weighs 10 tons, enough to put significant dents on a newly-asphalted road.

Jakosalem assured he will assign CITOM personnel at the area to ensure that no heavy trucks can use the roads.

The city decided to rehabilitate the two roads following numerous complaints from motorists on their deteriorating condition. (FREEMAN)
