Cashier indicted on three counts of qualified theft

- Mylen P. Manto -

CEBU, Philippines – A former cashier of Cebu Sendai Motor Sales Incorporated was indicted for three counts of qualified theft after she allegedly failed to remit more than P85,000 sales from the company's Talisay City branch.

Assistant city prosecutor Jenelyn Forrosuelo of Talisay City recommended the filing of the charges against Mhatisa Arcillas before the Regional Trial Court based on the complaint filed against her after she failed to answer the complaint.

The prosecutor's office has recommended P96,000 bail for her temporary liberty.

The case stemmed from a complaint filed by Fabian Aventorero, head of the internal audit department of Cebu Sendai Motor Sales Incorporated, alleging that Arcillas did not remit a total of P85,500 sales from its Talisay City branch in May 28, 2009.

Aventorero said he conducted a spot check on Arcillas accounts and found out that she received three payments from their customers but did not deposit to the company's bank account.

The complainant said they only discovered the irregularity after Arcillas tendered her resignation in June 5, 2009 after almost a year of serving the company as cashier in its Talisay City branch.

The prosecutor's office was forced to resolve the complaint based merely on the allegations of the complainant because Arcillas did not submit her counter-affidavit in spite of the ample time given to her.

"Respondent was the branch cashier of the Talisay Branch and was entrusted to receive customer payments in behalf of the company under obligation to deposit it to the bank. She, however, abused said trust and confidence by not depositing the amount received and using the same for her personal gains and benefit," Forrosuelo's resolution read. (FREEMAN)
