DOLE chief tells students to know their job prospects

CEBU, Philippines – Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz the other day advised Cebuano students to visit the DOLE website or its career guide portal to know their job prospects.

Baldoz, who was in town for the Visayas island-wide consultation for the National Labor and Employment Summit (NLES) on December 2010, said the website of the DOLE's Bureau of Local Employment (BLE) contain information about the careers the students might be interested in.

According to her, today's world of work needs knowledge workers who have HOT or "higher order thinking" skills, and workers who are multi-skilled, confident, adaptable, flexible, learnable, and trainable.

"More than this, today's workers should know and be familiar with the occupations that interest them and require their abilities and capabilities, and one of the ways to do this is by visiting our BLE website where there is a career guide section. Cebuano students who, after graduation from college will join the labor force, should visit this website to find out more about their career prospects," the Labor Secretary said.

Its website, which is the http://www.ble.gov.ph, has a career guide section that contains a series of occupational 'briefs' or summary information about hard-to-fill and highly indemand occupations.

The president of the Regional Federation of 4H Clubs of Region 6 and a student working for his master's degree aquaculture said that this kind of information is exactly what many Cebuano youth need today. (FREEMAN)
