PSME to lead celebration of Mechanical Engineering Week
CEBU, Philippines – The importance of the role mechanical engineering in the country will be highlighted as the Philippine Society of Mechanical Engineers (PSME) celebrates Mechanical Engineering Week on the third week of October.
The group's annual convention will be on Oct. 13 to 16 at the Philippine International Convention Center in Pasay City.
In Cebu, the celebration will feature a fun run on Oct. 9.
Engr. Julito Pogoy, PSME-Cebu Chapter President, said that the fun run will be from 5:30 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Mechanical engineers from various engineering firms in Cebu and students from different colleges and universities are expected to join the 10k, 5k, and 3k run.
Those who recently passed the board for mechanical engineers are required to run and shall join their respective chapters - the PSME Cebu, Mandaue, Lapu-lapu, Toledo, Cebu West and Cebu South.
Engr. Siegfred Sia, Fun Run chairman, said that the registration booth will be located at the ground floor of Ayala Center Cebu.
Registration fee is P200 for students, members and non-members of PSME. The money will be used for prizes, gift certificates, medals and others.
Aside from that, the proceeds of the activity will also fund the scholarship program of PSME, Sia said.
"We communicated with the (authorities) and the barangay officials to make sure the safety of the runners," Sia said.

Another event during the weeklong celebration will be the oathtaking of the new passers of the board. This will take place at the Casino Español on October 20 at 1:30 p.m.
Pogoy added that they are also going to create a Toast Masters Club to help new engineers build self-esteem.
Engr. Florencio Sy, PSME past president, said that mechanical engineers have done a lot for the country, such as the establishment of power plants. (FREEMAN)
