CEBU, Philippines – Her being a novice did not prevent ex-officio member Remedios Carmen Meca from getting committee chairmanships in the provincial board.
The new president of the Philippine Councilors League was designated to chair the committees on dangerous drugs abuse prevention and on ethics. Meca immediately started doing her homework by going to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency to get an overview of the drug situation in the province.
"When I know it, I set an appointment to have an overview on the drug menace and try to coordinate to the Provincial anti-Drug Abuse Council together with the pro-vincial director of the PNP and to the president of the Liga ng mga Barangay kung unsay ilang needs to get the target aim," she said.
PB member Jude Thaddeus Sybico said he believes in Meca's competence to handle the committee even if it is her first time. Sybico said that Meca's experiences as councilor in Danao City for two consecutive terms can be her edge.
"I am really not expecting something outstanding but I know she can do it even without the experience, she will learn through the ropes. For me dili hindrance kung babaye ka kay ang mahimo sa laki, mahimo pud sa babaye," he told The FREEMAN.
The 32-year-old PCL president admitted she was hesitant to accept the committee because of the difficulties related to a crime.
"Apprehensive ko kay it is for the male but gidawat na lang nako kay ako may nisunod ni Alfie. I am hoping nga makatabang ko sa problema sa province," she told reporters.
She said that next week she will plan what problems to be prioritized and try to coordinate with the regional director of the PNP in order to identify the problems down in the barangay level.
Aside from the two committees she is heading, Meca is also a member of the following committees; Barangay Affairs and Rural Development, Information and Communication Technology, Public Works and Highways and Infrastructure, Public Service, Complaints and Investigation, Youth and Sports Development Women Family and Minors, Commerce and Industry, Senior Citizens and Differently Abled Persons.
