Man stabs son-in-law dead over land dispute

CEBU, Philippines – An argument over land prompted a 66-year-old farmer to stab to death his son-in-law in Barangay Bae, Sibonga town Saturday evening.

Cristino Oplimo, 35, also a farmer, sustained a stabbed wound on the left side of his body and was declared dead on arrival at the Carcar District Hospital where he was brought for treatment.

Benvienido Villafranca, 66, the victim's father-in-law, voluntarily surrendered to barangay captain Constancio Padigos, who turned him over to the police for proper disposition and filing of charges.

Police said at around 7 p.m., the two, who were leaving together in the same house, had a drinking spree after their work.  

But due to intoxication, they allegedly engaged in a heated argument over the land they are tilling that eventually led Oplimo to pour soup on the face of the suspect.

Irked, Villafranca allegedly took a knife and stabbed the victim.

Police investigator Ederlino Bacusmo told The FREEMAN that before the incident, the victim reportedly repeatedly challenged his father-in-law to a fight.

Villafranca immediately fled after the incident but later surrended to Padigos and is now detained at the police station while facing homicide charges that will be filed against him.

In Danao City, an 18-year-old boy landed at the hospital after his group figured in a heated altercation with another group while having a drinking spree in Barangay Dawis Norte. At 4 a.m., the victim, Ricky Aringay and his friends were allegedly drinking in a store where the group of Junry Cabradilla, the suspect, was also drinking.

Moments later, a woman companion of Cabradilla allegedly transferred to the table where Aringay and his friends were that resulted to a heated argument between the two groups.

At the height of their argument, the victim said he saw Cabradilla pulling a "Batangas" knife prompting him to run for his safety. But the suspect allegedly chased him and stabbed him twice in the left part of his chest and abdomen. (FREEMAN)
