Rama scraps Carbon eviction proviso

- Garry B. Lao -

CEBU, Philippines – Mayor Michael Rama assured some 300 vendors of Carbon Public Market that there will be no demolition today even if they failed to sign an undertaking that the office of the mar-ket administrator wanted them to sign.

The members of the Cebu City United Vendors Association (CCUVA) trooped to City Hall yesterday to personally request the Mayor for the revision of the undertaking claiming that a provision of it is onerous and disadvantageous to them.

The vendors assailed the proviso of the undertaking stating that they can be demolished anytime at the discretion of the city.

"Ayaw mo kahadlok. Pamauli nalang mo kay ako nang gi-usab ang undertaking," Rama told the vendors.

Rama said he already ordered market administrator Raquel Arce to scrap the assailed provision of the undertaking. The vendors heave a sigh of relief when they heard the mayor's announce-ment and assurance.

The undertaking was supposed to take effect today. Arce earlier announced that those who have not signed the undertaking will be demolished. Even if the contested proviso was already scrapped, the vendors are still required to pay P75 for their identifi-cation card and the P100 notarial fee.

They are also required to wear their ID all the time they are in their vending area. During the press conference Rama said he will strictly implement the no ID, no vending policy. (FREEMAN)
