Lapu-Lapu island barangays get financial help from DOLE
CEBU, Philippines – Three island barangays in Lapu-Lapu City recently received financial assistance from the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment for the implementation of livelihood projects.
The regional office of DOLE 7 and the city government of Lapu-Lapu through the Lapu-Lapu City Public Employment Service Office awarded the livelihood assistance grants to barangays Sabang, Tungasan, and Caohagan.
DOLE-7 regional director Elias Cayanong assisted by Mayor Paz Radaza handed the checks in the amount of P150,000 each to barangay captain Lucia Aparece of Sabang and barangay captain Triponia Abayan of Tungasan.
Another check amounting to P184,000 was also awarded to barangay captain Heregio Abayan.
The three barangays of Lapu-Lapu City are the first to accomplish all the necessary requirements set by DOLE in order to avail of the financial grant.
Cayanong said more island barangays will be given financial assistance for livelihood projects once they comply with all the requirements.
The city government also received a check amounting to P300,000, as part of the Emergency Employment Program set up by DOLE and the city government to address the massive retrenchment at Mactan Export Processing Zone during the global economic crisis last year.
Under the program, the city government of Lapu-Lapu will also release P60,000 as counterpart to the amount in order to pay for the services rendered by the third batch of beneficiaries under the same program.
The Emergency Employment Program by DOLE 7 and the city government was able to find work for more than a hundred workers who were retrenched last year. (FREEMAN)
