PhilHealth gives Jonas plaque of appreciation

CEBU, Philippines - The Philippine Health Insurance Company has awarded the city government of Mandaue a "Plaque of Recognition" for enrolling the most number of indigent families and other sectors in the health program.

PhilHealth Vice President for Central Visayas William O. Chavez handed the award to Mayor Cortes, witnessed by PhilHealth officials and city hall employees.

Chavez told reporters that under the sponsorship program of Mayor Cortes, the city government of Mandaue has "achieved a universal coverage."

He said one should cover at least 85 percent of the targeted population before he can attain a universal coverage.

But in the case of Mayor Cortes, he has enrolled a total of 25,000 indigent families including even the trisikad drivers.

Cortes said his administration will prioritize pro-poor program in Mandaue City.

Chavez defined an indigent family as one who has no visible means of income or those whose income is not sufficient for the sustenance of family members.

He said that aside from the indigent families, the mayor had also enrolled those in the private sector as well as those who are retirees and self-employed.

All in all, there are 136, 436 Mandaue residents enrolled in the Philhealth progam.

"Mandaue under the sponsorship of Mayor Cortes has actually attained more than 100 percent in terms of Philhealth coverage," Chavez said.

Health benefits include 50 to 60 percent discounts in hospitalization expenses, discounted or free laboratory exams, and outpatient benefits.

All beneficiary members who are below the age of 20 can avail of the said benefits.

Also present at the gathering were Jeanet Ann Advincula, chief, Field Operations Division, Dr. Agnes Valencia, chief, Social Insurance officer, among others. (FREEMAN)
