Flyover eyed as solution to traffic woes at foot of Mandaue-Mactan bridge

- Jose P. Sollano -

CEBU, Philippines – A few believe that one of the ways that would ease traffic at the foot of the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge on the Lapu-Lapu City side is to construct a flyover.

Lapu-Lapu City Traffic Management System chief Frank Brazil said that sometime in 2005, the building of a flyover was recommended to the Metro Cebu Bridge Management Board, with a budget of P110 million.

Brazil said the Metro Cebu Bridge Management Board had endorsed to the Regional Development Council 7 the proposal with a budget of P187 million and he hopes that the project will be started early next year.

The board made the endorsement through a resolution during last month regular session presided by Governor Gwendolyn Garcia.

The board approved the resolution after a study conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways which showed that more vehicles use the first Mandaue-Mactan bridge compared to the Marcelo Fernan bridge.

It said it would be faster to get to barangay Poblacion where the public market is located if commuters and motorists took the Mandaue-Mactan Bridge.

Jeepneys and multicabs heading towards Phase 2 of the Mactan Export Processing Zone also takes the first bridge.

DPWH had recommended the construction of a flyover at the foot of the first bridge to decongest traffic.

DPWH has included its Annual Investment Plan in the proposal and the budget allocation of P187 million to finance the construction of the flyover. (THE FREEMAN)
