LP wants PCL elections postponed

CEBU, Philippines - The Liberal Party in Cebu is asking for a one week postponement of the scheduled August 4 elections of the Philippine Councilors League to allow the members to know their candidates and their programs better.

Pinamungajan Councilor Jeffrey Anthony Yapha, who is vying for PCL vice president, said their group has agreed to formally ask the Department of the Interior and Local Government to postpone the elections.

Yapha said there are people who get the position they desired to even if they are not capable for the job because they have the numbers.

“Ato nang likayan ang ing-ana kay in the long run ang league raman jud maoy mo suffer if ever we will appoint… they will elect… and appoint… designate people who are really incapable of doing their job,” Yapha said.

The postponement will allow the PCL members to know the background, plans and projects of those candidates vying for any position in the PCL, Yapha added. The LP slate met yesterday to finalize their plans to move for the postponement of the elections so they can have another set of planning and to have more time for campaigning and to have an open forum and debate for all the candidates.

LP members in Cebu are optimistic that with the endorsement from Vice Governor Gregorio Sanchez Jr. the DILG will grant their request.

If DILG grants their request and sponsor a debate for all the candidates the LP slate are hopeful that a good number of them will be elected. The LP slate in Cebu is led by Talisay City Councilor Romeo Villarante as candidate for president.

Villarante and his late will be competing against the candidates and resources of the One Cebu Party.

The One Cebu Party is set to field the powerful tandem of Danao City Councilor Remedios Meca and Talisay City Councilor Eduardo “Digul” Gullas III.

The DILG has scheduled the PCL elections on August 4 at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Even if it is a secret voting, Yapha believes that it is important that all the councilors will have the chance to know who they are voting for. —THE FREEMAN
