Man critical after motorcycle slams into Ceres bus

- Mellanie Joy C. Rosales -

CEBU, Philippines – A man is in critical condition after the motorcycle he was driving slammed head on to a Ceres bus along the national highway in Daanbantayan town last Monday morning.

Details of the incident remain sketchy as no one reportedly saw the collision as it happened, but police suspect both vehicles were traveling fast. Residents near the area only came to know of the incident after hearing the sound of the impact.

The Yamaha Krypton motorcycle with plate number YT-2189 driven by Nevementes Dumon, 45, was heading towards Bogo City while the Ceres bus with plate number driven by Aurelio Abayon, 45, was heading towards Daanbantayan town. They collided in Barangay Calape in Daanbantayan.

PO2 Noynay Columbus of the Daanbantayan police told The FREEMAN that Dumon was not wearing a helmet when the accident occurred. He was thrown off six feet away from his motorcycle when it collided with the bus.

The motorcycle was badly damaged while the left headlight of the bus was removed due to the impact.

Dumon was brought to the Daanbantayan District Hospital, but was later transferred to the Visayas Community Medical Center in Cebu City owing to the severity of his injuries.

Abayon was detained at the police station but was later released after the company gave financial assistance to the victim.

Evening on the same day, a five-year-old boy sustained injuries after he was shoved under a car that hit him while he was crossing the national highway in Barangay Poblacion, San Remigio town.

PO3 Wendel Pestaño, desk officer of the San Remigio Police, said Richard Mencidor was reportedly being chased by his uncle when he crossed the street and got hit by the Isuzu Trooper with plate number GNY 591 driven by one Joemel Decara. His uncle, Renoel Ruedes was also slightly hit by the vehicle.

"Napasok ilawom sa sakyanan si Richard unya ang iya uyuan murag natapsingan. Ingaon ang mga nakakita na nag-ginukdanay kuno ang duha," Pestaño said.

Pestaño said the victims were lucky that Ruedes was not driving speedily otherwise they could have sustained serious injuries. Decara said he was heading towards Bogo City at that time and did not notice the two cross the street.

The victims were brought to the Don Severo Verallo Hospital in Bogo City where their injuries were treated.

Decara voluntarily surrendered to the police, but was eventually released after the owner of the car provided assistance to the victims. (THE FREEMAN)
