Cop tries to kill self, drinks "Zonrox"

- Niña G. Sumacot-Abenoja -

CEBU, Philippines- For causing disturbance in the neighborhood when he tried to kill himself by drinking a liquid stain remover, a policeman maybe facing criminal complaints for alarm and scandal.

Police Officer 2 Alejandro Laborte was taken into custody by Police Chief Inspector George Ylanan after almost an hour of negotiation. Ylanan and the members of the Investigation and Detective Management Branch of the Cebu City Police Office responded to Barangay Tisa last Wednesday evening after receiving reports of alleged hostage taking.

Laborte locked himself inside his house making the police suspicious that he held somebody a hostage. Laborte refused to go out unless his wife would come and talk to him. It was learned that Laborte broke up with his wife over a week ago.

The police managed to have Mrs. Laborte come to negotiate for her husband to come out. Laborte went out without a hostage upon seeing his wife. The police later learned that Laborte only wanted to talk to his wife but when the latter refused he tried to kill himself.

Laborte allegedly drank a liquid stain remover locally known as Zonrox causing him to keep vomiting. Laborte’s brother told the police that he took the service firearm when he learned that the latter is planning to commit suicide.

At the CCPO, the suspect kept on vomiting prompting them to admit Laborte at the nearby police hospital. Laborte is now in a stable condition, Ylanan said.

Sr. Supt. Patrocinio Comendador, Director of the CCPO, said they will have the suspect undergo counseling when he is released from the hospital before they subject him to an investigation for possible administrative sanction and filing of criminal complaints for alarm and scandal.
