Cayanong: OSY computer training starts next month

- Johanna T. Natavio -

CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Labor and Employment announces the start of the registration for its computer training program for the out-of-school youth starting next month.

DOLE regional director Elias Cayanong said they will start accepting applicants on July 1 for the free computer training. Interested out of school youths may visit the DOLE office located at the 2nd floor, GMC Plaza Building, M.J. Cuenco Avenue, Cebu City.

Cayanong said that the department recently received 15 units of personal computers for its Kabataan Information Technology Opportunities Project to help raise the level of computer literacy to those who cannot afford to enrol in computer schools.

The project is designed to introduce the new technology to the disadvantaged sectors starting with the OSY. After the course, they can become volunteer trainors of the program upon passing the comprehensive in-house computer accreditation examination.

All volunteer-trainors will receive a minimal stipend to support their daily transportation.

They will also receive Certificate of Competency and Accreditation for standing up and answering the call of volunteerism.

Cayanong said volunteers are needed to sustain the project and reach out to as many sectors as possible for the next five months.

He is hopeful that it will stir the voluntarism spirit of the youth for they will be trained in facilitating, leadership and team building.

Cayanong said that for July the program will cater to OSY, August will be for vendors, September will be for women while October, November and December will be for farmers, fisher folks and displaced workers respectively.

“We cannot do away with the computer technology. Some may not be ready, but the Department of Labor and Employment in its efforts to promote workers welfare and gainful employment extends its services beyond its normal working days for all class will be conducted on Saturdays. Knowing the overhead cost, we can only hope that these trainees will apply their new skill in the workplace, livelihood or enterprises. It will be our privilege to extend the extra mile needed to reach out to the disadvantaged sectors.” Cayanong added. — THE FREEMAN
