CEBU, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology opened the DOST Exposition and Conference on Environmentally Sound Technologies (DECEST) at the Ayala Center yesterday afternoon.

The opening ceremony was graced by Cebu City mayor-elect Michael Rama, vice mayor-elect Joy Agustus-Young, Department of Environment and Natural Resources regional executive director Leonardo Sibbaluca, Cebu Holdings Inc. President Francis Monera, Technology Application and Promotions Institute (TAPI) director Dr. Edgar Garcia, Samuel Chioson of Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and DOST Undersecretary Fortunato dela Peña.

DOST-7 director Rene Burt N. Llanto, who welcomed the participants, said that choosing Cebu as the venue for this national event was appropriate and timely as Cebu has been experiencing rapid economic growth.

Sibbaluca commended the DOST-7 for the event as it made the public to appreciate scientific equipment through environmentally sound technologies.

Rama, in his speech, emphasized the need for people to help one another in order to solve the problem and achieve changes they wish to have.

“If you voted me as your mayor, don’t just look at me and expect that everything will come from me. We make things happen,” Rama said.

Dela Peña noted that the real solution to the existing problem of the society is to educate the people, saying that people should work collectively and help one another.

The three-day affair showcases a selection of environmentally sound technologies (ESTs) developed by the DOST and its partners. It also features a series of science and technology conferences to unravel critical issues pertaining to the role of environmentally sound technologies in sustainable development and business.

The exhibit, which is open to the public from June 8 to 10, provides the people with opportunities to get involved in various activities featuring environmentally sound technologies, products, and services developed by the DOST and its partners.

The ESTs exposition and conferences are part DOST’s share in the celebration of the Philippine Environment Month and Cebu Business Month this month. — THE FREEMAN
