1 killed, another injured in Talisay riot

CEBU, Philippines - A man was killed while his companion is in critical condition after they were shot and stabbed while trying to pacify rioting groups at a benefit dance in barangay Cansojong, Talisay City dawn yesterday.

Rolando Canillo, 26, did not make it alive at the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound on his chest while Richard Misterio had to be transferred to another hospital in Cebu City because of his critical condition.

Canillo was hit on the upper right part of his chest, which caused his instantaneous death. Misterio, meanwhile, was stabbed on his lower chest.

The suspects, identified as siblings Jun-Jun and Jessie Samarana, both of legal age, fled right after the incident.

Based on investigation conducted by PO2 Epifanio Comendido, Jr. of the Talisay City police, the victims and the suspects attended the benefit dance in sitio Riverside, Barangay Cansojong.

They were reporting drinking intoxicating beverage while enjoying the activity when a commotion ensued among several disco-goers, prompting Canillo and Misterio to intervene. However, Jun-jun allegedly shot Canillo while Jessie stabbed Misterio.

Canillo is a resident in the area while Misterio comes from Calatrava, Negros Oriental. The suspects reportedly hail from Guihulngan, Negros Oriental.

Both victims were taken to the Talisay District Hospital but Canillo did not make it there alive. Misterio was later transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

Investigation is ongoing for the possible arrest of the suspects. — THE FREEMAN
