Man dies, 8 others injured in separate road accidents

CEBU, Philippines - A man died after his motorcycle went wayward when it accidentally established contact with a cargo truck he was driving along C. Padilla Street shortly before midday last Monday.

Bryan Rodriguez Zafra, 25, died when his head hit the pavement.

Investigation showed that Zafra was driving his motorcycle at the right side of the Isuzu cargo truck with plate number GWE-915 driven by Daniel Gera, 26, of Barangay San Isidro, Talisay City.

It was not clear which of the two vehicles hit which first, but police said the Honda motorcycle with plate number 1309-GM was at a disadvantage simply because it was much smaller.

Zafra was rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center, but he was declared dead on arrival. Gera surrendered to the Mambaling Police Station and was subsequently turned over to the Traffic Patrol Group.

Charges for reckless imprudence resulting in homicide are now being prepared against the suspect.

Meanwhile, at least eight persons were injured when the pickup truck they were riding in turned turtle in Barangay Luka, Oslob town last Sunday afternoon.

Injured were Flora Cole, 40; John Cole, 22; Avelgica Cole, 13; Joseph Cole, 19; Sahra Mae Cole, 4; Leopoldo Masocol, 19; Francisco Masocol, 60 and Miribel Calachan, 36. They were all brought to the Oslob District Hospital.

Flora, John and Avelgica were later transferred to a hospital in Cebu City for further treatment due to the seriousness of their injuries.

Initial investigation revealed that the private Suzuki multicab with plate number GSP-799 driven by Emmanuel Ylaya was coming from a mountainous area of Barangay Luka when it lost control when its break malfunctioned.

Ylaya reportedly swerved the vehicle to the left, which caused it to turn upside down and even hit a house owned by one Aniano Valero.

The driver voluntarily surrendered to the Oslob police station. – Niña G. Sumacot and Gabriel C. Bonjoc/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
