Escapee yields 3 days after bolting jail
CEBU, Philippines - A suspected robber gave himself up to police authorities three days after he escaped from the Lapu-Lapu City police detention cell.
Joshua Sayson, a native of Barangay Lorega San Miguel, Cebu City, escaped last Sunday evening by cutting the edge of the prison bar railing of his detention cell.
Sayson, who was charged with robbery and attempted homicide, was fetched by Lapu-Lapu police officers from the Mobile Patrol Group in Cebu City where he surrendered to PO2 Peter Serafin.
In an interview with The FREEMAN, Lapu-Lapu City police director Mariano Natuel Jr. said the suspect admitted to him that he surrendered for fear for his life after he learned that police authorities are already hunting him down.
“Naka-huna-huna gyud siya og surrender kay iyang pagtuo nga iyang malutsan ang kaso nga iyang giatubang,” Natuel said.
Sayson, who managed to escape the facility by bending the iron bar and wiggling his body through the space, was detained at the Cebu City Jail last March 20, 2009 after he was convicted for concealing of deadly weapon and possession of illegal drug paraphernalia. He was released from detention only last April 21, 2010.
But even if Sayson is already back in jail, Natuel said PO2 Jude Thaddeus Abella and PO2 Dario Arias, who were on duty during the escape will still be facing investigation.
“The case is now at the regional headquarters. It’s up to the hearing officer,” Natuel said.
The two police officers were charged for negligence in violation of Article 244 of the Revised Penal Code and grave misconduct under Napolcom memorandum circular 2007. Their corresponding punishment will depend on the gravity of their offense that will be established in the ongoing investigation. (FREEMAN NEWS)
