CEBU, Philippines - A prisoner who escaped from the Barili Police Station last year was recaptured yesterday, but landed in the hospital due to a gunshot wound he sustained when he tried to resist arrest.
It was on February 19, 2009 when the suspect, Arnel Oga-ob, escaped from the Barili Police Station where he was detained for charges of rape with homicide.
He escaped when he and two other detainees were brought outside their detention cells for their so-called “sunning activity.” Only one policeman, PO2 William Ricardo Beltran, was reportedly escorting the three at that time.
At 8am yesterday, a team composed of PO3 Marianito Morales, PO2 Edmund Obiso, and PO2 Jeorbe Demagus proceeded to sitio Nappo, Barangay Santa Anna in Barili after they received a tip that the suspect was at his mother’s house.
A chase ensued when Oga-ob tried to resist arrest. He also allegedly tried to shoot Demagus, but his firearm reportedly malfunctioned, giving the cop the chance to shoot him. Oga-ob was hit on the left side of his body and was brought to the Barili District Hospital for treatment.
Because his wound is reportedly minor, he was subsequently transported back to the Barili Police Station. He is scheduled to undergo an x-ray examination today.
The police, however, failed to recover Oga-ob’s firearm. (FREEMAN NEWS)
