CEBU, Philippines - The provincial board has approved a resolution urging all local government units in Cebu to craft an ordinance providing insurance benefits to the barangay tanods.
The resolution sponsored by provincial board member Juan Bolo asked the different LGUs to protect the welfare of the tanods by providing them insurance and other benefits not only limited to hospitalization and burial assistance.
The resolution which was approved last Monday stated that tanods must be protected because they are facing dangers in the performance of their duties to maintain the peace and order in the barangay.
“Tanods are vested with the public duty to maintain the peace and order situation of the barangay and it would just be rightful to give them the necessary protection and aid,” read a portion of the resolution.
Bolo’s resolution mentioned the risk constantly faced by the tanods while conducting roving and responding to alarms and emergencies within their area of jurisdiction.
“Tanods must be afforded appropriate assistance whenever they get sick, hospitalized or assistance to their families when they died,” the resolution added.
It was explained in the resolution that it would be very difficult to provide the needed assistance to the tanods without the local ordinance.
