CEBU, Philippines - Two men were killed while two others were injured, one severely, after they were shot by unidentified assailants in Talisay City and Naga City over the weekend.
Dante Cabrera, 31, died after being shot by an unidentified person inside his shanty in Barangay Lawaan I, Talisay City, Cebu past 2 a.m. yesterday.
Cabrera’s former common-law-wife alleged to the police that the victim was a member of the Alpha Kappa Rho fraternity and usually stole electrical cables in their place.
The police, however, could not produce documents from their police station to prove that the victim had criminal records.
Prior to the incident, the victim was drinking with friends identified as Danny Espinosa, Diodito Castillo, and Milky Gimena near his shanty but they later transferred near a store.
They parted ways and went to their respective homes around 2 a.m.
Moments later, Lorenzo, the father of the victim, heard two gunshots at his son’s shanty which prompted him to check. He later went back to his own house after seeing his son sleeping soundly.
The police said that Lorenzo may have not noticed his son suffering in pain that time.
Cabrera’s friends came looking for him around 7 a.m. yesterday to supposedly push through their plan the previous night to broil fish but they were shock to find him lying on his bed inside his shanty already dead.
They informed Lorenzo of the matter and eventually learned that Cabrera was shot in the forehead and left hip.
Meanwhile, a mechanic died while his fellow mechanics were injured after they were shot by a lone assailant last Saturday night in Barangay Naalad, Naga City.
Leonardo Canonego Jr., a resident of Barangay Lutac, Naga City, died in the hospital due to a gunshot wound to the back of his head. The slug exited through his forehead.
His companions, Cerelo Generona, 23, who was hit on his neck was transferred to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center while Ervin Canonego, 33, his cousin, only suffered bruises on his body after falling off the motorcycle they were riding on.
The three were on a motorcycle on their way home from their work as motorcycle mechanics in Minglanilla when a man standing by the roadside suddenly shot them.
Leonardo was rushed to the South General Hospital where he was declared dead minutes later while Generona was taken to the Minglanilla District Hospital and was later transferred to VSMMC because of his condition. — Niña G. Sumacot/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
