Establishments urged to conserve water

CEBU, Philippines - In response to the threats of the El Niño phenomenon, the Cebu Provincial Board has passed a resolution urging big establishments to conserve water.

The resolution, introduced by Board Member Juan Bolo, said that Department of Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Horacio Ramos called on establishments, especially those that use substantial amount of water, to support President Arroyo’s directives to conserve and recycle water.

The resolution said that Malacañang earlier directed all government agencies to cut down on their water consumption by ten percent and observe water conservation measures amid the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to worsen in the coming months.

It said that firms should reuse their wastewater and tap it for other uses, such as to water the plants, cool boilers, flush urinals and toilet bowls, even to wash company vehicles.

“In the face of climate change, it is important that we now adopt water conservation as a way of life, and not just during the summer months,” the resolution said. — Jose P. Sollano/LPM   (FREEMAN NEWS)
