City to construct two new compost facilities

CEBU, Philippines - As part of its solid waste management program, the Cebu City government will be putting up two new compost facilities in the different areas in the city.

Last Wednesday, the City Council has approved the P8 million funding being sought by the Solid Waste Management Board of the City Hall for the establishment of two compost facilities.

One of these facilities will be built at the Osmeña shrine in Barangay Kalunasan and the other will be located at Block 27, lot 10 and 11 of the North Reclamation Area, near SM City-Cebu.

The two new compost facilities will be added to the existing compost facility already installed at the South Road Properties that processes two to five tons of garbage a day.

The composting project is expected to reduce the load being dumped at the Sanitary Landfill in Inayawan, especially the biodegradable ones, by five to 10 percent.

Councilor Nestor Archival Sr. said that the city is disposing about 350,000 to 400,000 kilos or 385 to 440 tons of garbage to the landfill everyday. Of the volume, he added that about 200,000 kilos are biodegradable.

According to him, the compost facilities will reduce five to 10 percent which is equivalent to about 30,000 kilos or 33 tons of biodegradable waste per day.

Reducing waste being dumped at the Inayawan landfill is one of the priorities of the city now as it recently declared the landfill under state of “imminent danger” for continue releasing smoke and methane gas that is harmful not only to the environment but also the people residing in the surrounding area.

The City Council last month has also set aside P10 million for the preemptive measures that will be undertaken at the landfill. — Jessica Ann R. Pareja/WAB (FREEMAN NEWS)
