Danao kagawad, daughter to face charges for obstruction of justice

CEBU, Philippines - A councilman of barangay Looc in Danao City and his daughter were arrested by police officers after reportedly meddling in the arrest of his son who is allegedly into the peddling of illegal drugs.

At past 8:00 the other night, commotion ensued on Tupas Street in Danao City when police officers facilitated the arrest of one Alvaro Alvaro alias “Barok”, and an unidentified companion, during a buy-bust operation.

The poseur buyer used P1,500 marked money in the deal. Afterwhich, the money and a medium-size pack of suspected shabu were confiscated as well as a .45 caliber pistol with six live bullets from the possession of Barok. Another .380 caliber pistol with six live bullets was recovered from the unidentified companion of Barok.

The pieces of evidence include a mobile phone with a text message that read: “Nindot ni akong mga butang. Muduwa sad ko’g ½ kilo.”

But during the operation, the father of Barok identified as Antonio Navarro Alvaro and his daughter Maria Theresa Veloso allegedly attacked the authorities.

SPO1 Ferdinand Navales, one of the responding policemen, was even reportedly beaten up by the councilman.

It was learned that Barok, during the commotion, found the opportunity to elude arrest. The operation was carried out by the Provincial Intelligence Branch in coordination with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency and the Danao City Police.

Senior Supt. Jesus Gaquing, Cebu Provincial Police Office director, said that the councilman and his daughter will be facing charges such as obstruction of justice in relation to Presidential Decree 1829, otherwise known as the law on penalizing obstruction of apprehension and prosecution of criminal offenders; and another case for direct assault.

As for Barok, he will be charged for drug peddling and illegal possession of firearm. Gaquing confirmed that Barok is a known drug peddler in the area.

“Known na gyod ni siya didto. Na-raid naman gani ni sila kaniadto,” Gaquing said. — Gabriel C. Bonjoc/MEEV   (FREEMAN NEWS)
