Fire brings down giant Christmas tree in Boljoon
CEBU, Philippines - The giant Christmas tree that was put up in front of the historical church in the southern town of Boljoon burned down around 9:30 pm on Christmas eve.
Residents near the church were caught by surprise when the Christmas tree was already in flames. The colourful giant Christmas tree was made out of indigenous materials.
With the help of residents in the area, firemen completely put out the fire an hour after it erupted.
Initial investigation revealed that the fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring at the nativity scene near the base of the tree.
No one was hurt during the incident, but the fire worried the town’s residents for fear that it might also hit the oldest remaining original stone church in Cebu. In 1999, the National Historical Institute declared the church a National Historical Landmark. – Gabriel C. Bonjoc/JMO (FREEMAN NEWS)
