CEBU, Philippines - The provincial government will be giving financial assistance to the family of Z “The Dream” Gorres after the boxer suffered a major injury following his fight against Colombian Luiz Melendez last Sunday (Manila time).
The Provincial Board approved to give the financial assistance through a resolution passed in its regular session yesterday.
Majority floor leader Victor Maambong said its now up to Governor Gwendolyn Garcia how much to give Gorres’ family, but “definitely the family will receive financial aid from the province.”
The resolution also recognizes Gorres, a native of Mandaue City, as “one of the excellent professional boxers in the world.”
Maambong said Gorres’ family is “totally dependent on him for support, thus they are having difficulty footing the mounting hospital bills.”
Gorres won in his fight against Melendez at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, but he collapsed shortly after he was proclaimed winner.
He was rushed to the University Medical Center in Las Vegas where he underwent surgery due to a blood clot on the left side of his brain.
He is recovering but remained in critical condition as of yesterday. — Liv G. Campo/JMO (FREEMAN NEWS)
