PB backs proposed random drug tests on foreign studes

CEBU, Philippines - The Cebu Provincial Board is supporting the proposal of the Dangerous Drugs Board to conduct a random drug testing on foreign students who are studying at language centers in the country.

“It is very important to remind these foreign students that they should respect our laws, specifically our laws on drugs,” reads the newly-approved resolution that was sponsored by PB Member Juan Bolo.

The resolution supports the DDB’s call for the Bureau of Immigration to conduct random drug testing on foreign nationals who are enrolled in language centers.

It was DDB Undersecretary Clarence Paul Oaminal who initiated the call after two Koreans were recently caught allegedly sniffing marijuana sticks while at a disco bar in Cebu City. And that there are reportedly more of language center students who are into drugs, said Bolo.

The move is part of DDB’s campaign to curb illegal drugs in the country, considering that drug-related crimes remain to be in the top list. The agency has already requested the Department of Justice regarding the proposal.

“There is a need for a special program to monitor these foreign students in language centers because they would not stay long in the country when compared to those taking up regular courses,” the resolution further reads. — Liv G. Campo/WAB  (THE FREEMAN)
