CEBU, Philippines - The National Statistics Office-7 will conduct the 18th Philippine Statistics Quiz at the University of San Carlos on November 6 as part of the provincial activities for the National Statistics Month celebration.
Juanilla Premne, district statistics officer in the province of Cebu, said that four universities and colleges have already submitted their entry for the said quiz. These are the University of San Jose-Recoletos, the University of the Philippines, the Cebu State College of Science and Technology, and the Saint Theresa’s College.
Noel Rafols from NSO also said that the provincial elimination will be simultaneously conducted in other provinces of the region.
Regional championships will be on November 12, while the national competition is scheduled on December 4 in Manila.
The PSQ is an annual competition designed to test college freshmen’s knowledge of statistics as acquired from the secondary education curriculum. It aims to promote, enhance, and instill appreciation on the value of statistics among Filipino youth. It also seeks to generate greater public awareness on the importance of statistics in development planning and gaining better cooperation in government statistical activities.
At stake for the top five winners in the PSQ national finals are cash and trophies, among others. All regional champions will also be awarded during the national finals with a PSQ medal and a certificate of recognition. Their respective coaches, the college or university where they are currently enrolled, as well as the high school where they graduated from will likewise be given certificates of recognition.
Presidential Proclamation No. 647 issued by former President Corazon Aquino in 1990 declared the observance of NSM every October. For this year, the lead agency is the Department of National Defense.
