Kin of Busay bus accident victims get cash from city
MANILA PhIlippines The families of those persons who were killed or injured when a bus plunged down a cliff in sitio Maaslom, barangay Busay, last April 22, 2009 will be given cash assistance from the Cebu City government.
The Cebu City Council has appropriated P235,000 for the financial assistance of the families of the victims.
Councilor Gerardo Carillo, chairman of the City Disaster Coordinating Council said the families of Margie Mabini, 44, and five-year-old Jesan Gleneco who were killed in that accident will receive P10,000 each.
Carillo said each of the 43 injured victims will also receive P5,000 financial assistance.
The Department of Social Welfare and Services, through the CCDCC, recommended that cash assistance will be granted to the victims.
Since some of the injured victims just belong to one family, it would mean that some families may receive more than just P5,000.
The victims and casualties were residents of barangay Babag, a mountain barangay of Cebu City, who were on their way to a summer excursion to Danao City, but encountered the accident when they reached sitio Maaslom.
The bus owned by barangay Sambag 1 and driven by 44-year-old Rufino Secretaria was running downhill from barangay Babag when the vehicle’s brakes malfunctioned.
The vehicle went off the road and down the cliff, turned turtle and rested 15 meters away from the road.
Carillo said the city will help the victims because they had spent their own money for drugs and medicines when they were rushed to different hospitals after the incident. — Rene U. Borromeo/BRP
