CEBU, Philippines - Vice Mayor Michael Rama has expressed appreciation over the recent statement of former senator John Henry “Sonny” Osmeña that he will not support his cousin, Georgia Osmeña in the coming May 2010 elections.
Rama said that Sonny’s move will help lessen his points of preparation for the next year’s elections when he will vie for the mayoral seat.
Sonny, in a press conference earlier gave a categorical “no” when asked if he will back Georgia, younger sister of incumbent Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who has endorsed Rama to be his successor.
The former senator has formed an opposition bloc to field candidates in the 2010 elections, but he will not be supporting Georgia, who has already announced her intention to run for mayor in Cebu City.
Although Sonny and Tomas do not see eye-to-eye, both shared the same position on Georgia’s candidacy.
“No, because even if Tommy and I don’t agree on certain issues, I respect his ascendancy in the political scene,” Sonny told reporters yesterday.
Sonny held a press conference after the formal launching of Panaghiusa, a group he revived to fight the administration of President Gloria Arroyo.
Mayor Osmeña, on the other hand, welcomed the resurrection of political leaders through the Partido Panaghiusa, saying the party will surely give a headache to incumbent governor Gwendolyn Garcia when she runs for another term.
The mayor also believes that Mimo Osmeña, son of former governor Lito Osmeña, has bigger chances of winning if he runs for governor in the coming elections. — Jasmin R. Uy/WAB (FREEMAN NEWS)
