More erring drivers in Central Visayas in 2008 than in 2007

-

CEBU, Philippines -  More erring drivers were apprehended in Cebu and other places in Central Visayas last year compared to the number of erring drivers apprehended in the region in 2007.

Records of the Land Transportation Office showed that 92,879 erring drivers were apprehended last year- 33,029 more than the 59,850 drivers apprehended in 2007.

It is unclear, however, if the data meant there were actually more abusive drivers last year or the authorities just became more active in their pursuit against erring drivers.

An LTO official said the number of apprehensions against erring drivers went up because of the intensified campaign conducted by the deputized agents, including the Task Force Alpha that has more than 100 active members.

The records showed that the most common violations are the non-wearing of seat belts, illegal parking, obstruction, reckless driving and the failure to carry the vehicle’s registration while on the road.

Central Visayas ranked third throughout the country in the number of drivers apprehended for not wearing seat belts. There were 5,993 apprehended drivers in 2007 and 14,314 last year.

Meanwhile, records at the LTO showed there were 76,796 newly-acquired vehicles registered in Central Visayas last year, bringing to 478,097 the total number of vehicles listed in the region.

Aside from these, many others operate in Cebu despite being registered in other regions. These include 3,071 cars; 8,473 public utility vehicles; 1,589 sports utility vehicles; 1,858 trucks; 90 buses; 61,300 motorcycles; and 415 trailers.

Records further showed that Central Visayas has 47,545 units of assorted vehicles for hire, including 14,563 passenger jeepneys; 22,826 tricycles; 5,393 taxi cabs; 2,368 trucks; 1,345 buses; 336 cars; and 349 trailers. — Rene U. Borromeo/JMO   (THE FREEMAN)
