Man shot in neighbor's wake

CEBU, Philippines - A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot by his ex-convict neighbor while attending a wake at around 3 a.m. last Tuesday in Barangay Banhigan, Badian town.

Boni Francis Chavez, single, jobless, a resident of the area, was hit two times on the back portion of his body.

The suspect, Perry Mabuting, legal age, married, was later arrested by the police at his house during a hot pursuit operation.

Mina Chavez, mother of the victim, told the police officers that her son was attending the wake of a neighbor when the suspect suddenly appeared and without any provocation, shot the victim twice hitting him in the back.

The suspect immediately fled after shooting while the victim was rushed to the nearest hospital and later transferred to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center due to the fatal wounds that he sustained.

PO3 Jeremias Elardo of Badian police station said that until now, the suspect still refused to tell the reason why he shot Chavez.

“Ex-convict man gud ning suspect pero wala lang ko ka sure ug unsa iyang kaso basta naka serve nani sa Muntinlupa ang suspek,” Elardo said.

The police failed to recover the firearm Mabuting used in shooting the victim. Appropriate charges would be filed in court today against the suspect. — Gabriel C. Bonjoc/WAB    (FREEMAN NEWS)
