Students relocated to avoid WWII bombs

-

CEBU, Philippines - Nine sections of the Argao Central Elementary School were pulled out of their classrooms yesterday after parents feared that Japanese bombs buried during World War II might still be in the area and might harm the students.

Anxiety on the part of the parents came about following reports of an undisclosed treasure hunt in the school, reportedly in the guise of cleaning the school’s septic tanks, which are located near the classrooms of the nine sections.

Upon prodding of the parents, the nine sections were evacuated and classes were held at the school’s social hall.

Willie Adonay, the school principal, denied the reported treasure hunt but Arden Monisit, Department of Education Cebu Province Division Superintendent, said the parents’ concern was valid. He said the parents may even demand to evacuate the school or not to send their children to school if they believe that their children are facing imminent danger.

Monisit said classes came smoothly despite being held at the social hall. He said the public has nothing to worry about police personnel have been deployed to watch the area.

He also ordered Adonay to explain the situation to the students during their flag retreat so as not to cause panic. He further ordered not to open the septic tanks at night to prevent further speculations. The septic tanks were reportedly sealed long ago to prevent accidents.

Monisit said classes would still be held at the social hall until the Cebu Provincial Tourism and Heritage Council visits the area tomorrow to investigate the alleged treasure hunt. The Mines and Geosciences Bureau will also survey the area if necessary.

Monisit said they will ask the Governor’s office to send bomb experts to the school to ensure the safety of the area.

He said the primary concern is the welfare and safety of the students and if there is indeed a treasure hunt is being conducted, investigation will be channeled to the proper authorities. — Jessica Ann R. Pareja/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
