Ex-convict charged for shooting policeman
CEBU, Philippines - An ex-convict is going back to jail after prosecutors did not recommend bail for his temporary liberty for shooting a policeman in Talisay City last June 6.
Prosecutors elevated murder charges in court against Anthony “Tonton” Aves yesterday for shooting to death PO2 Benjamin “Boyet” Racaza right outside the victim’s house in barangay Dumlog, Talisay City.
Aves allegedly shot Racaza while the latter was having a drinking spree with neighbors Gerry Entoma and Joseph Cejas. Racaza died with a single gunshot on his head.
Racaza’s wife Cecilia said her husband had told her that he once advised Aves to stop pursuing his illegal drug trade.
In their affidavits, Entoma and Cejas said they were drinking outside Racaza’s house when Aves approached them and asked if he could sell his fighting cocks to Racaza.
Aves even reportedly made a deal that he will give his “bantam” for free should Racaza buy the fighting cocks.
When Aves placed down the bantam cock, Racaza, who was seating on a monobloc chair stooped down to see it, but it was when Aves pulled a .45 caliber pistol and shot the victim on his head.
The two said Aves brandished gun thereafter but they immediately hit behind Racaza’s multicab.
Prosecutors sent a subpoena to Aves but the latter failed to answer the charges, thus, the formal filing of the case in court. No bail was recommended for Aves’ temporary liberty. — Jasmin R. Uy/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
