Police outpost to rise in front of city jail

CEBU, Philippines - The police and barangay officials of Guadalupe are now finalizing the plan to put up a police and tanod outpost in front of the Cebu City Jail in Barangay Kalunasan.

Sr. Insp. Mario Monilar, chief of Police Station 9 in Barangay Guadalupe, which has the jurisdiction over the city jail, said there will be about six policemen assisted by barangay tanods to man the proposed outpost for 24 hours. Monilar said the plan is aimed at maintaining police visibility and maximize their abilities as policemen.

He said the killing of suspected robber Jeromy Polistico a few days ago right in front of the Cebu City Jail was not just the main reason for the putting up of an outpost in the area.

Monilar explained the idea for the project was conceptualized by City Councilor Augustus Pe, chairman of the committee on police, order and security.

Earlier, city jail warden Efren Nemeño said the plan to put up a police outpost outside the jail facility was a matter agreed upon in a meeting with the police and barangay officials, but because of some reasons he does not know, it did not push through until now.

Monilar said that the construction of the outpost is what has left only for them to do since everything was already prepared.

Polistico, one of the accused in the botched P7.2 million jewelry heist last month, was shot dead by two unidentified men in front of the main gate of the city jail just after a few minutes he had posted bail for his temporary liberty. —Niña G. Sumacot/WAB   (THE FREEMAN)
