Consolacion police chief transferred

CEBU, Philippines - The chief of police in Consolacion town was relieved after Mayor Avelino Gungob sent a request to Cebu Provincial Police Office chief Sr. Supt. Jesus Gaquing.

Sr. Insp. Jesus Elmer Fernandez is now assigned to the Sibonga police station after Gungob requested him to be relieved for “so many reasons”.

The trouble began when Gungob sent a letter to Fernandez requesting the release his motorcycle that was impounded when his brother Joselito Gungob was arrested last month by policemen of Consolacion for alleged illegal possession of firearms.

Fernandez did not grant the request of the mayor.

Fernandez, in an interview with dySS Super Radyo, said that he did not grant the request of the mayor because the motorcycle was used by the arrested person and therefore it is an accessory to a crime.

Gaquing said he also received the request of the mayor and then called Fernandez regarding the request.

Saying that he does not want police service in Consolacion to suffer, Gaquing relieved Fernandez effective July 31 and ordered Supt. Renato Malazarte to take over his post while still remaining the deputy provincial director for administration.

Gaquing said that Gungob’s letter request for the relief of Fernandez did not mention any specific incident citing Fernandez as an irresponsible official.

Gaquing added that in the short period of time Fernandez served as chief of police in Consolacion town he met the requirements set for police officials.

Rumors also came out that Joselito Gungob has his own television set inside the detention cell but Fernandez denied that saying no detainee will receive any special treatment.
