Cerge pushes volunteerism in era of economic crisis

CEBU, Philippines - Press Secretary Cerge Remonde is encouraging volunteerism as a way to survive in these uncertain times.

Remonde, who was the guest speaker during the 29th Induction Ceremonies of the Rotary Club of Cebu East at the New White Gold House, also said the volunteerism, as exemplified by the Rotarians, is worthy of emulation.

The newly-inducted officers of RCCE are led by Elias Baquero, who was elected as president of the club. Baquero is also the president of Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists.

The Cebuano cabinet member added that the administration of President Gloria Arroyo needs volunteers who will help set and finance livelihood undertakings that will create more jobs, build and repair schools, take care of the health and medical needs of citizens, help rid the community of bad elements and take good care of the environment.

“Yes, we need volunteers like the Rotarians who have been doing all of these all over the world for more than a century now. Yes, the Rotary is the biggest organization of volunteers in this planet,” Remonde said.

The press secretary also lauded RCCE since its inception 29 years ago, a classic example of this volunteerism wherein the club had initiated various projects that have benefited the less-fortunate Filipinos, such as deep-well installation under its water projects.

Aside from this, the club also repaired school buildings in Mabolo, granted scholarships to deserving students, planted mangroves and trees and carried out medical and dental missions under its health program.

Remonde said that Rotary Clubs not only served their communities but have also succeeded in fostering brotherhood among their members and in promoting stronger ties with the people they serve.
