Church people tackle impact of crisis
CEBU, Philippines - The Promotion of Church People’s Response–Cebu Chapter holds today a social forum on the impact of the global economic crisis believed to have been continually suffered by the country.
The forum with the theme “Church People’s Response to the Effect of the Global Crisis on the Filipino People,” gathers all faithful and concerned at the Bradford Church, Osmeña Boulevard, Cebu City this afternoon.
“Amid attempts in the Lower House of Congress to change the Philippine Constitution through Constituent Assembly, this fact remains: the Filipino nation has been besieged by the repercussions of the global economic crisis and the different sectors especially the poor are the worst hit,” said PCPR-Cebu Secretariat Rev. Jess Primacio.
He said that PCPR will fittingly tackle the issue today to magnify to the church people the urgency to respond to the situation. “We just want to tell the people the situation today and encourage them to care and to take action,” Primacio said.
There will be an open forum to give opportunities to everyone to share their ideas, a call to action for appropriate response in the right situation and testimonies from the rural and urban poor. PCPR National President and Carmelite priest Fr. Jerry Sabado is the main speaker who will discuss on the effects of the global economic meltdown in general view.
Representatives from the Roman Catholic Church, Iglesia Filipina Independiente, United Church of Christ in the Philippines, Cebu Muslim Community and other churches, on the other hand, will speak on the church people’s response to the effects of the global crisis on the poor.
“This activity will hopefully be a step in putting into action PCPR’s mandate to live out our preferential option for the poor by being in solidarity with them,” Primacio said.
Registration is free. Everyone is invited to attend. — Jessica Ann R. Pareja/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
