Cerge: No to politics. for now

-

CEBU, Philippines - Press Secretary Cerge Remonde thanked those who are considering him as the perfect candidate to run for Congress in the 2010 elections but said that for now he wants to focus on his current position as the Press Secretary of the Arroyo Administration.

Especially as his position is a source of pride for the Cebuanos.

Remonde said that he has not yet established if he wants to run for an elective position. But he also said service to the people, may it be locally or nationally, is something that he is interested in.

He said that all he wants is to offer his service to the people regardless of what position he is in. In fact, he said that this is the reason why he entered the media, to give service to the people.

“I consider each opportunity to serve the public,” said Remonde.

According to Remonde, there is a right time for everything but as of now he said politics is something he has to think about seriously.

Remonde also commented on politicians who have announced their support of lowering the taxes.

He said that this should not be made as a main issue because the bigger challenge is making “genuine social transformation”.

He said that supporting the reduction of taxes will be easy to say but it would be hard to do, even if they will be seated in the top post of the government.

This was after presidential aspirants who visited Cebu lately said that they favor the reduction of taxes seeing it as a way to survive the financial instability.

During Remonde’s visit to Cebu for the 111th Independence Day celebration of the government offices, where he was the guest of honor, Remonde also answered questions of the media regarding the controversial Constituent Assembly and Charter Change.

Though Remonde said that matters concerning this should be answered by the members of Congress because they were the ones who pushed it, he denied that the move of the House representatives was made upon orders of President Gloria Arroyo’s administration.

He said that those saying this should look at the House resolution where it is stated that there will be no extension of term for the president. — AJ de la Torre/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
