University of the Visayas offers nursing diploma to Pinoy caregivers

CEBU, Philippines – The University of the Visayas took a technological turn as it entered into a memorandum of agreement yesterday with a California-based school to provide nursing diploma to Filipinos based in the United States through online education.

Al Cabusas, president of Nursing Distance Learning Center, which has an address at Old Bayshore Highway in Burlingame, CA, told The FREEMAN that they see the need of Filipinos working in the States as caregivers to get nursing degrees.

Since nursing education in the US is very expensive, aside from the full-time work of Filipino caregivers, Cabusas said they have devised a study plan that is “perfect” for their full schedule: online education.

“The distance learning is designed for those who are presently working and don’t have the time to go to school,” said Cabusas.

With this agreement, UV will provide its own clinical instructors to teach the Filipino students from the US online.

Among other courses, UV also offers the four-year nursing course.

Cabusas also said that with their enhanced proctoring, progress monitoring, seminars and workshops for this program, there is a “fat chance” that their students will pass the National Council Licensure Examination.

The MOA, which was signed at the UV, stipulated the NDLC and its sub-affiliates are given the “sole” and “exclusive authority” to recruit and enroll students for UV’s BSN program in the US.

Apart from the BSN program, NDLC and UV also offer a bridge program for Licensed Vocation Nurses (LVN) who are already in the US but want to get a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree to qualify for NCLEX-RN.

Another bridge program will also be offered to Filipinos who are residents of the US and want to obtain a BSN diploma.
