Man burns own house in Daanbantayan town

CEBU, Philippines - A 63-year-old man attempted to commit suicide by burning their house and stabbing himself in barangay Bateria, Daanbantayan town around 3 p.m. last Monday afternoon.

Before the incident, Maximo Ostia Sr. and his son, a seaman, had some argument about his request for additional allotment.

SPO3 Carlos Condino, investigator on case, said that after the argument with his son, Ostia left their house.

He was then seen by their neighbors cutting some malunggay trees and brought them inside their house.

Neighbors then saw Ostia’s house was already burning and immediately rescued him.

Suffering from first-degree burns, Ostia was rushed to Daanbantayan District Hospital and was later transferred to Don Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City.

Firemen were late to respond as the house was already completely burned when they arrived. Damage was estimated at P700,000.

Police discovered a stab wound in Ostia’s abdomen, believing that after he burned their house he then stabbed himself since no foul play has been found in the incident. — Christopher Gabriel C. Bonjoc/LPM  (THE FREEMAN)
