Liloan town to honor outstanding athletes

-

CEBU, Philippines - Athletes that have reaped awards for Liloan in different sporting events will be honored during this year’s fiesta celebration of the town.

The list of honorees is yet to be finalized but Liloan Mayor Vincent Frasco said they are those that triumphed in events such as the provincial meet and the Governor’s cup. They will be honored on May 23 during the “Sports Night,” a highlight in this year’s fiesta.

“The Liloanons will also get to know more of Liloan’s much talked-about athletes who were making waves in various events of their respective fields,” Frasco said.

This year’s festivities will kick off on May 20 with an early morning mass at the decades-old San Fernando Rey Parish Church, which will be followed by a parade and walk for a cause. Activities of the first day will be capped by an event sponsored by the parish.

Frasco said teachers in Liloan will also be given an evening of their own on May 21.

Frasco also said an evening show organized by the municipal government will be staged on May 25, which will serve a prelude to the much-anticipated annual fisheries night on May 26 dubbed “Takot Fishtival” after Liloan’s own marine sanctuary, the Takot Reef.

On May 28, the town will hold a search for its Festival Queen with each candidate to highlight the culture of the area she is representing. The next day, on May 29, the beat of drums and the colorful costumes will highlight the Mardi Gras, which will be capped with a disco in the evening.

This year’s festivities will also feature the first ever “Mayor Duke Motocross” on May 31. — Garry B. Lao/JMO  (THE FREEMAN)
