CEBU, Philippines - In response to the call for doable measures to mitigate global warming, the employees of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-7 participated in the potting of seedlings of fruit-bearing trees since February 20 and have since done so on Fridays.
Each employee is required the potting of 300 seedlings. As of today, there are already 168,600 potted seedlings placed at a nursery on Capitol Hills in barangay Capitol Site, this city.
Dr. Isabelo Montejo, regional technical director for forestry, said that they are promoting fruit trees for their replanting program as these trees have dual purpose. Fruit-bearing trees sequester carbon from the atmosphere and provide food for both people and animals or certain species of insects, this was pointed out.
Most of the seedlings being collected are that of the jackfruit and mango fruits.
Jackfruit, for instance, is very beneficial and that it easily grows and does not require years before it bears fruits, Montejo said. — Johanna T. Natavio/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
