Cebu City records 21 more cases of dengue

CEBU, Philippines - At least 21 more dengue cases were recorded in Cebu City last week but health officials announced that no new casualties were reported to their office as of yesterday.

The new cases bring to 264 the total number of dengue cases in the city from January to April 30 this year. The number of casualties from that period remained seven, according to a report submitted to the office of Councilor Gerardo Carillo.

During the same period last year, the City Health Department had recorded 485 dengue cases with 22 deaths.

“The total number of dengue cases now is 45 per cent lower compared to the figure in the same period last year,” said Durinda Macasocol, the assistant chief of the City Epidemiology Surveillance and Statistics Unit.

Macasocol said most of the victims are male aged from six to 51 years old.

She added that the barangays with the highest number of dengue cases are Kamputhaw, Labangon, Tisa, Guadalupe, Carreta and Lorega-San Miguel.

The records showed that those casualties include two from Labangon and one each from Lorega-San Miguel, Kamputhaw, Binaliw, Sudlon II and Guadalupe.

The latest casualty was a five-year-old boy from sitio Bonbonan in barangay Labangon.

City health officials advise residents to immediately bring family members with high fever to the hospital or health center, and that they should clean up their surroundings to prevent dengue-carrying mosquitoes from breeding. – Rene U. Borromeo/LPM (THE FREEMAN)
