Liloan to put up sanitary landfill
CEBU, Philippines - The municipality of Lilo-an is planning to put up a sanitary landfill to cope with the growing garbage problem and in compliance with the Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Mayor Vincent “Duke” Frasco said the town is already operating an open dumpsite located in barangay Sta. Cruz. The sanitary landfill will be located in barangay Calero.
In a recent meeting of the Municipal Development Council, Frasco stressed the importance of taking good care of the environment through the proper disposal of wastes.
Solid waste is segregated before these are brought to the sanitary landfill, or the final disposal facility.
The landfill replaces the traditional open dumpsite which is environmentally hazardous and also a violation of RA 9003, which mandates all local government units to construct a sanitary landfill by 2006.
Frasco explained that the sanitary landfill in the town would be well regulated, saying that it is essential for Liloan’s vision to become a city.
The mayor explained that a landfill is best located on a flat land, and not on the steep terrains of the mountain barangays.
Frasco assured that barangay Calero residents who will be affected by the project will be taken care of.
