CEBU, Philippines – Charges for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition will be filed against a certain Edwin Alvero after members of the provincial police seized high-powered firearms from his house in barangay Panas, Consolacion town.
The raiding team, composed of the Provincial Intelligence Branch, Special Reaction Unit and Provincial Anti-Illegal Drugs Special Operation Task Force implemented the search warrant issued by Regional Trial Court judge Soliver Peras against Alvero last Saturday.
Seized during the operation were a 12-gauge shotgun marked “Maverick”, a Mossberg model shotgun with two live rounds and a nickel-plated .38 cal. revolver with four live rounds.
Based on police records, Alvero tried to escape the raiding team during the implementation of the warrant.
It so happened that the police vehicle arrived at the gate of Alvero’s house the same instant the latter was about to leave on his vehicle. When Alvero’s wife disembarked to open the gate and the raiding team also disembarked to introduce themselves, Alvero reportedly panicked and stepped on the accelerator, hitting the police vehicle as he drove past.
However, perhaps due to panic, Alvero failed to control the speed of his Isuzu D-Max, which reportedly caused the vehicle to fall down a small cliff.
Alvero was lucky enough to avoid injury, as he was later rescued by the raiding team. —Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc/JMO (THE FREEMAN)
