Kenney: Cebu to benefit from $73 million aid from US

-

CEBU, Philippines - Cebu is expected to benefit from the $73-million new assistance from the United States for energy and the environment.

US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie Kenney, who was the special guest in the launching of the Clean Air Youth Alliance yesterday at the Cebu City Hall grounds said that the City of Cebu will be among the cities to benefit from the newly signed assistance from the US government for projects particularly in cleaning the air.

“We signed two weeks ago, a new assistance for energy and environment with the Philippines at $73 million, for a few years, specifically for projects for clean air,” Kenney said.

Among the projects in line is the strengthening of the campaign and use of clean fuels among jeepneys, jointly undertaken with the Department of Transportation and Communication and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

It will also include solar power for rural electrification in cities which are off the grid and other clean air projects, Kenney said.

In her speech Kenney said she is excited that the youth is now actively involved in making a safe environment.

“We flap our wings together and we soar higher, we keep the air clean together, and if you need help, you may call on friends, America, DENR and the rest, call on your friends and we’ll be there for you,” Kenney said.

Cebu City Acting Mayor Michael Rama said the city is vigilant for the same cause.

The City Traffic Operations Management has been a partner in the enforcement of the laws aimed at eradicating air pollution such as smoke belching.

Representatives from various schools who are members of the newly formed CAYA pledged specific and doable actions such as walking instead of riding to save on fuel, quitting smoking and supporting activities in keeping the environment clean.

The activity culminated with the releasing of the doves symbolizing the aim of the youth for cleaner air.

Kenney and Rama were joined by Committee on Environment and Natural Resources head councilor Nestor Archival and Environmental Management Bureau lawyer Rolando Luego.

Cebu City is implementing the Air Quality Management Program, aimed at reducing vehicle emissions in the city.

It helped in the passage of the passing of the Anti-Smoke Belching ordinance, enabling the city to impose fines and penalties to emission standard violators.

Just last month, the Philippines officially inaugurated the Metro Cebu Airshed Governing Board with US support.

After the program the Ambassador proceeded to NCR for a visit and then to a gathering of US Peace Corpse in the City and flew back to Manila in the evening. — Ferliza C. Contratista/BRP (THE FREEMAN)
