Wall collapses, pins man to death

CEBU, Philippines - Shortly after a man was warned of the concrete wall he was working on, the structure collapsed pinning him to death before noontime yesterday.

The victim identified as Jerry Calapuan, 33, of Catigbian, Bohol and a temporary resident of Mandaue City, was hired by couple Eddie and Dolly Urdaneta to demolish a concrete wall of an abandoned house in Remedios Compound, at the back of the TESDA building, in barangay Luz.

According to co-worker Nestor Longakit, Calapuan decided to take a rest near the wall he was knocking down. “Ako pa gy’od siyang gi-warningan nga dili mokompiyansa kay huyang na ang bungbong kay nasugdan na god pagbakbak,” Longakit said.

However, it was too late as the wrecked wall had toppled down on the victim.

The Urdanetas confirmed they hired Calapuan for P250 daily labor.

“Amo pang istoryahon ang pamilya ani, pero we assure nga we will shoulder the burial expenses kay moral obligation man gyod ni namo isip maoy nag-hire niya,” Eddie said. – Christopher Gabriel Bonjoc and Niña Chrismae Sumacot/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
