Siloys dominate Carmen's Sinulog
CEBU – Sinulog dancers from Alcoy town emerged as first-prize winners in the 36th Sinulog sa Carmen last Sunday under the out-of-town contingent category.
The Siloys, named after the black shama endemic in the Nug-as Forest of Alcoy, who placed fourth in the Sinulog-based category in Cebu City, were also declared the best in the street dancing category.
The Siloys were already the crowd’s favorite, earlier, during the street parade.
Contingent from the Don Sergio Osmeña, Sr. Memorial National High School seems to have a penchant for second spot. They finished second again in the Carmen competition with the best in costume award.
The Mantawi Tribe of Mandaue City settled for third prize and went home brighter after they were declared most colorful.
Aside from trophies, the winners received P150,000; P100,000; and P75,000 respectively.
The other special award was given to Tribu Tayuranon for best in musicality. Under the local-lower category, the contingent from barangay Dawis Norte was declared champion. Dawis Norte was followed by Cogon East and Cogon West. Winners received P10,000; P8,000; and P5,000 respectively.
Under the local-upper category, barangay Lanipgan was adjudged the first-prize winner, while contingents from Upper Natimaw-an and barangay Triumfo got the second and third places, respectively. Winners were awarded P10,000; P7,000; and P5,000.
Mayor Sonia Pua, Vice Mayor Martin Gerard Villamor, and the members of the Sangguniang Bayan of Carmen expressed their gratitude to those who supported the staging of the event despite the economic crunch affecting people globally.
