Cebu - With barely two months more before the Kaplag celebration, barangay San Nicolas captain Edgar Lauron requests financial aid worth P150,000 from the Cebu City government to fund the staging of the second Buwad Festival.
The said amount, according to the breakdown of expenses submitted by San Nicolas councilman Abraham Desamparado, would cover the prizes for the winning contingents.
The dancing contingent that will grab the grand prize will get P30,000; P20,000 for the second placer, and P10,000 for the contingent in third place.
Seed money worth P5,000 for each of the 12 participating sitios of barangay San Nicolas would mean a budget of P60,000, the breakdown read.
Councilor Gerardo Carillo sponsored the resolution for the P150,000 funding.
The Buwad Festival will showcase various dried fish products, including the popular “danggit” from Bantayan Island.
Fr. Trinidad Silva, parish priest, said that “kaplag” has something to do with the discovery of the image of the Infant Jesus 443 years ago. The icon is believed to have been discovered at the place where the San Nicolas Parish Church now stands. — Ferliza C. Contratista/MEEV (THE FREEMAN)
